The West Coast of Vancouver Island
The West Coast of Vancouver Island is located on the Pacific Rim and is noted for big wave surfing, winter storm watching, and of course, the challenging West Coast Trail.
The rugged beauty of the coastline draws hiking enthusiasts and nature lovers year 'round. Sightings of wildlife are common, and our majestic west coast rain forests contain an abundant variety of unique plant life. The beaches range from wide open and sandy, to rocky outcroppings filled with wondrous tidal pools.
The West Coast of the island has such a variety of sights, sounds and experiences to offer. Any visit to Vancouver Island just wouldn't be complete without experiencing this rare gem.
The West Coast is not heavily populated and therefore it tends to be on the rustic side. Don't get me wrong...there are certainly some lovely luxury resorts (they'll even provide rainwear for storm watching, and lessons for surfing big waves), but this area is extremely popular with the back-to-nature crowd who prefer to camp out and enjoy the West Coast experience up close. If you do choose camping over a hotel or resort, be aware that you’ll need to be very careful about how you handle food and garbage. That’s because you'll be sharing the land with bears, cougars and other local wildlife. And, if you’re lucky, you’ll be able to photograph some of these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat.
