Telegraph Cove Hidden Gem of the North Coast
Telegraph Cove is a small community that you will be glad you took the time to discover. On your journeys, I will bet you have never encountered a place as diverse, as unique and as interesting as this area.
It is a little isolated, with only a few places to stay overnight but it has a great old store and a very nice modern restaurant. East of Port Hardy and Port McNeill, west of Sayward and North West of Campbell River, it is a little of the main highway but worth the drive in. (See the map on Home Page!)
Many visitors take a tour from Campbell River or Port Hardy and both are easily accessible by car as a day trip option. Just be warned that you have to book well in advance if you expect to stay in Telegraph Cove, which really is no bigger than a very small village around a dock.
Telegraph Cove, however is one of those "must see" items if you want to explore the natural sea life, from an authentic old fishing inlet: and one that is famous for it's kayaking tours!
Whale Watching from Telegraph Cove
Did you know that this small area resting on the coast of Northern Vancouver Island is the home of Stubbs Island Whale Watching? Killer whale watching on this Pacific coast town is courtesy of the best known company anywhere else in the world.
For your convenience, there are hydrophones to allow you to hear the noises whales make. Biologists are aboard to explain the basics of the whale family and it’s habits. There are daily trips, so you do not have to feel rushed to take in everything the first day you are there. Normally you will be aboard ship for three to three and a half hours on one of these whale watching jaunts.
The family atmosphere that people feel when they come to this community is the reason they decide to come back year after year. After all, isn’t that the best reason for deciding to take a vacation to a small community? If you had wanted impersonal, the trip would have had an entirely different location.
Places to Stay
If camping is one of your favorite vacation things to do, then this is definitely the place. A campground map can be provided for you so choosing a spot should not be a difficult job. If camping is not the type of vacation you had in mind, don’t worry, there are cabins available. .
When you decide to go to Telegraph Cove, you will see all the sights you have pictured in your mind and more. The different type of terrain will amaze you. The best places found for a kayaking adventure is located less than a 30 minute ride by boat from the dock itself.
The kayaking thrill includes watching the orcas. Some have even been known to come within a few feet of the kayaker. How about that to set your pulses to racing?
You do not have to share your adventures with other boat tours because the this area is located away from the hustle and bustle of other tour companies. The camping sites are very secluded and have views that you will never forget.
Wild animals are abundant here, in this unspoilt wilderness. The bald eagles, otters, bears, and the many animals that reside in the forest are another one of the attractions you will see. Would you like to see a real live grizzly bear? Well, if you choose Telegraph Cove for a vacation, before you leave, I would imagine you will see one.
This northern Vancouver Island area has a summer temperature that is ideal. Between 60 and 77 degrees in the summer, this is the perfect weather for enjoying all this beautiful community has to offer. Winter is a little cooler with temperatures in the 40’s. Dry summers with occasional showers are predominantly the norm.
Okay, so you have been very patient, lets look at a great slide show to music (turn on the speakers!)...and spot the Cruise Ship coming back from the Alaska run->
[ The train, in the slide show, by the way, was one used to move the lumber from the forests nearby, but is now derelict.]
This is the ultimate vacation spot for those who love to be outdoors. If watching wildlife and sunsets is your idea of heaven on earth, you definitely need to visit Telegraph Cove.
I would say this is one of my "You need to discover this gem" places to visit...and take a kayaking or whale watching tour while your there!
