Spring Salmon
...in the Stamp River.

Alex Discovers Vancouver Island

Alex takes us to fish for Spring Salmon in Stamp River with a very experienced fishing guide you should be aware of!

We drifted the Stamp river in the fall a few years ago. It was our first time with Dave Murphy, a very qualified fishing guide, and we were looking to catch Chinook or Spring salmon. There were four of us in the group and I was in Dave’s boat with my son.

We drove up to near Stamp Falls to load up and when we were picking up the tackle. Dave looked at my 8 weight fly rod and said “Leave the fly rod in the car. These fish lie deep.” So I left the fly rod in the car. In the first pool that we fished I banked a jack, about an eight pound fish.

Spring Salmon Fishing on Vancouver Island

A jack is a male salmon that returns after three years in the ocean. It’s nature’s way of ensuring that there are no unaccompanied females at the spawning beds. They are great fighters especially on a fly rod, they readily take a rolled muddler minnow.

Then we went up to a rock run to try for a coho. Dave showed how to fish the white waters at rock runs. Shorten the distance from the weight to the float down to about eighteen inches and shorten the leader down to eight inches. Don’t cast far off the reel just strip two or three yards off and work the waters close to the bank. Keep the drift short. Just use a small piece of wool on the hook. For coho use pink or peach wool.

I used a piece of peach colored wool and I hooked into a big spring salmon. It ran upstream and I pressured it to turn around. It did and on it’s second run it broke the line.

Dave gave me another piece of advice. “Never stop a fish, particularly a spring salmon, that’s running upstream,” It tires itself out quicker if it’s running upstream -- don’t turn it around. That was a nice fish you just lost.”

We all caught the limit that day. If you are going to fish for Spring salmon in the Stamp river you need to book early and use one of the best fishing guides:
