Lake Cowichan
The Outdoor Recreation Paradise.

Lake Cowichan is, not surprisingly, located directly on Cowichan Lake, which is one of the largest fresh water bodies on Vancouver Island.

With just over 3,000 residents, the tiny community is a haven for outdoor recreation. The area proudly boasts some of the best trails, hiking and fishing of Vancouver Island.

Indeed, you can find a place to participate in any form of sport or recreational activity, as the lake itself provides a great place for kayaking and boating.

There are nearly a dozen wineries and vineyards in the area. Many of these wineries are also conveniently located to major trails and afford a great opportunity for resting and relaxing while indulging your senses of taste, smell and sight.

Map of Lake Cowichan

Stay relaxed with the many golf courses in the area while taking in the views of the lake and the surrounding forests. For those who like it hot, Lake Cowichan has the highest average summer temperatures anywhere in Canada.

If you’re more of the active sort, you are sure to be able to "scratch that itch" right here. The town has countless parks, campgrounds and trails.

You can find equestrian trails as well as biking and hiking trails. You will also find walking trails that are more accessible and easy than others.

One of the more popular trails is Cowichan River Footpath, which is a 20 kilometer long hiking trail. Other trails include the local segment of the Trans Canada Trail.

Water sports and boating are popular on the lake, as of course is fishing.

One of the best places to fish from is Gordon Bay Provincial Park, from which you can launch your boat into Cowichan Lake. There are other smaller lakes close by, such as Lomas Lake, where you can participate in everything from windsurfing to paddling, waterskiing to canoing.

From Lake Cowichan you can enter Cowichan River Provincial Park. This park also offers plenty of activities and beautiful scenery; it is also renowned for its wild salmon.

You can do more than just take in the views and get some exercise however. You can also learn about the surrounding environment and learn about how to respect, save and protect it.

The Cowichan Lake Forest Research Station has over 200 imported tree specimens and conducts high level research. You can learn about the history of the town itself at the great Kaatza Station Museum.

Lake Cowichan is a great family destination. Dad can go off fishing while the kids participate in some fun, cool water activities and Mom samples the shops and local wines.

Mix and match that combination anyway you please and you’ll see that this tiny spot is an ideal getaway for people and groups of all ages.
